Description
A screw extractor removes screws, bolts and studs that have snapped off or have stripped heads. It has a tapered left-hand spiral, so as you turn it anticlockwise into a drilled pilot hole it bites tighter and unscrews the broken piece. No. 1 suits small screws and No. 4 larger bolts and studs.
Centre-punch the broken screw, drill a pilot hole of the size marked for the extractor, then tap the extractor in and turn it slowly anticlockwise with a tap wrench. Penetrating oil helps. Do not force it, as a snapped extractor is very hard to remove.
